GREAT WAR. "France! How your name caresses my ear". In-folio - Lot 11
GREAT WAR. "France! How your name caresses my ear". In-folio manuscript collection written in October 1914 in Holland by a young French officer born in Paris, comprising 5 pp. He declaims his love for France: "France! how your name caresses my ear, sweet and bewitching as the voice of the nightingale enchants the nights of May... For centuries you have been the Chosen One, the alma mater, supreme guide of world taste. Listen no longer to the deranged words of those who judge you to be behind the times...". It is preserved along with a handwritten collection entitled "Le Tambour", 12 pp. long, and the 16-page report of a pre-conflict trip to Portugal by the same officer: "... For several days now, I have been writing to you, and I have been listening to you...". You can get an idea of it by walking up and down our butte Montmartre in all directions...".
