Pierre MILAN (French artist active between 1542 and 1557. Ecole de Fontainebleau) - "Dance of the Dryads". Burin after Rosso Fiorentino (Florence 1495 † Paris 1540), formerly attributed to René Boyvin (Angers c.1525 † Rome 1598. Ecole de Fontainebleau). Ref: Zerner, no. 1. Robert-Dumesnil (Boyvin), no. 74. Proof of the 2nd state of 2, with Hondius address, on watermarked laid paper (Nivelle shield?). The subject is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses VIII 738-884: the dryads protect the tree threatened by Erysichthon. This composition by Rosso is painted in a cartouche below the "Sacrifice" in the Galerie François I at the Château de Fontainebleau. 27.4 x 40.2 cm. Condition B/C (Cut at the border of the subject (tablet missing) and trace of old median vertical fold visible on verso. A few small printing and handling creases. A tiny brown spot in the upper left sky).
