REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 - 1669) - "Christ before Pilate, - Lot 14
REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 - 1669) - "Christ before Pilate, large plate". 1636. Original etching. Ref: Bartsch, n°77. New Hollstein, n°155 (IV or V of V). Beautiful impression. 53.7 x 44.7 cm for the subject. 58 x 49.2 cm overall. Condition B/C (cut to the subject and formerly laminated to the back of an 18th-century map of the Dept. of Gard, a few tears formerly restored and a few small epidermoles, a few small accidents...). In this composition, Rembrandt added a self-portrait top center behind the group of men on the terrace to the left of Christ (the head with the feathered hat). This masterpiece, one of Rembrandt's greatest coppers, would have been executed over the course of two years. Until the 19th century, "Christ before Pilate" and its counterpart "The Descent from the Cross" were considered two of Rembrandt's finest engravings.
