Michel Lomonossow. History of Russia, From... - Lot 314 - Eric Caudron
Michel Lomonossow. History of Russia, From the Origin of the Russian Nation, to the Death of the Grand Duke Jaroslaws First. Translated from the German, by M. E***. Paris, Guillyn, and Dijon, Des Ventes, 1769. One volume in-8°, full marbled calf, spine decorated, gilt fillet on the edges, red edges. Binding of the period. Complete with the two geographical maps, enhanced with watercolors. The translator would be Marc-Antoine Eidous. Light wetness on the last leaves. The introduction to this History of Russia begins as follows: "The Russian Nation has experienced from the earliest times until today so many revolutions, that when one reflects on the internal and foreign wars it has had to support, one can only be surprised that after so many divisions, misfortunes and troubles, not only has it not been annihilated, but that it has reached the greatness, power and elevation in which we see it. Russia, although weakened outside by the Ugrians, the Peczenegrians, the Polowzians, the Tartars, the Polonians, the Swedes and the Turks, and inside by the troubles and seditions with which it was agitated, has risen with new splendor. Every misfortune has been for her a new source of happiness; her reverses have served to increase her power & reputation, & Providence has given her prudent & courageous Sovereigns, who have known how to raise the courage of a people that so many misfortunes had brought down.
