Vasily Nikitin. Covered silver & gilt cup, with effigy, figure & arms of the empress Elisabeth Petrovna. Moscow, around 1741-1761. Silver. Total weight (tumbler, lid & socket) : 634,53 g. Total height : 28,7 cm. Height of the tumbler : 14 cm. Height of the socket : 11 cm. Diameter of the bowl : 11 cm. Diameter of the foot: 8.5 cm. ◊◊ master goldsmith : BH (in a heart). Deeply engraved inscription under the bottom : N°54.1ф 53 з Engraved inscription, ibidem: 134 z Engraved inscription, ibidem : 1.56 On the inner edge of the pedestal, monogram pushed to the dotted line, in graphic capital letters : EP, (the P surmounted by a kind of tilde). Resting on a smooth circular pedestal, the body of the goblet, slightly flared, is stamped & recased with a rich decoration of majesty: three medallions (busted effigy to the right; crowned imperial eagle, stamped with the shield to the Saint George; crowned EP figure), separated by an eight-pointed shining star in diamond point, and bouquets of flowers & fruits ; in the lower part delimited by a double net, three small oval medallions surrounded by branches, alternating with the large ones, with allegorical avian decoration (swan & swan sailing; eagle flying towards the sun; bird diving towards the waves), separated from a similar star but of a slightly smaller size. The lid has on its stave three stars as above, equally distributed and separating bunches of flowers & foliage; the upper part is covered with large foliage scrolls; the high handle, fixed to the lid by a screw nut, takes the form of a baluster topped by the crowned imperial eagle. The inside of the cup and the lid is entirely covered with vermeil. The inscription "1ф 53 з" corresponds to the weight of the object, expressed in the Russian measures then in use (funt & zolotniki). 1 funt & 53 zolotniki is equivalent to 636 grams (the actual weight of the object). Vasily Nikitin (Vasily Nikitin), a famous Moscow silversmith, practiced his art between the years 1737 and 1767. Extraordinary cup, of imperial provenance. The Hermitage Museum holds a similar cup from the collection of Count Sheremetyeff.Василий Никитин.
