Mug with a hinged lid, carved in a mammoth... - Lot 16 - Eric Caudron
Mug with a hinged lid, carved in a mammoth tusk, and illustrating the heroic sacrifice of Ivan Susanin. Russia. 1st half of the XIXth century (partly the end of the XVIIIth century (?) Mammoth ivory (Schreger stripes at about 70°). 23,5 x 12 x 21 cm. The body of the mug represents a famous episode in the history of the Russian nation, namely the heroic feat of the peasant Ivan Soussanin, who sacrificed his life to save the Tsar Mikhail Feodorovitch during the war against the Poles (1609-1618). When he was asked by the Polish soldiers to guide them to the Tsar whom they wanted to assassinate, Ivan Soussanine led them astray in a swampy forest where they started to get stuck. Mad with rage at having been deceived in this way, the Poles took revenge by piercing him with their swords; Ivan Soussanine had time to draw the sign of the Cross on him, and died with dignity having offered his life for the Tsar. The lid of the mug is decorated with a medallion with the portrait of Mikhail Feodorovich (1596-1645), the first tsar of the Romanoff dynasty; the handle is crowned with the coat of arms with a double-headed eagle; on the buttresses of the lid there is a picture of the Ipatiev monastery, where Mikhail Feodorovich Romanov was staying when he was called to the throne (1613) The interest in Ivan Rusanin's feat was particularly strong during the reign of Nicholas I. Especially during the Polish uprising of 1830-1831. At that time, a great number of paintings, novels, dramas and operas were dedicated to the exploit of Susanin. In 1837-1863 under the direction of architect Constantin Ton, the Ipatiev Monastery was rebuilt. Given the importance of this mug, it is possible that it was an imperial commission. Nota bene: Schreger's striations, visible in several places on this tankard, indicate that it was carved from Mammoth ivory; as a result, its trade is free and not subject to the prohibitions that affect elephant ivory. .
