Like many artists, Rembrandt depicted the Holy Family fleeing to Egypt to escape the persecution of King Herod. He gave the episode the appearance of everyday life, with Mary and Joseph in humble garb and consumed by parental concerns. In the nighttime print, a tired Mary tries to nurse her child, who appears to have fallen asleep. A year later, Rembrandt would return to this theme, experimenting with a lighter, more delicate style. 9,2 x 5,9 cm on copper. 9,5 x 6,2 cm the sheet. Condition A (formerly pasted in full on paper).
