REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 - 1669) - "Johannes Wytenbogardus" (Jan Uytenbogaert, Arminian preacher). 1635. Original etching, drypoint and burin. Signed and dated "Rembrandt f. / 1635" on the point. Ref: Bartsch, no. 279. New Hollstein, n°153. Proof of a late print, on cream laid paper. Margins. "Johannes Uytenbogaert (1557-1644), tutor to Frederick of Orange and minister to Prince Maurice, was in his time the most prominent theologian and preacher of the remonstrators, Calvinists who followed the doctrine of Arminius (Harmensen). [...] This is Rembrandt's first engraved portrait of a person who did not belong to his family. It is also his first official portrait, commissioned, perhaps, by the preacher himself or his followers, to be distributed to the members of the sect" (BNF). 22 x 18,3 cm approximately for the subject (hexagonal plate). 25,3 x 19,8 cm the sheet. Condition A (rare small marginal stains and old mounted by the corners on glossy paper).
