CRANACH Lucas the elder (1472-1553) - "The Penance of Saint John Chrysostom". 1509. Burin. Signed with the monogram and dated in the tablet at the foot of the composition. Ref: Hollstein & Bartsch, n°1. Beautiful proof on watermarked laid paper (escutcheon). The influence of Albrecht Dürer is clearly perceptible in "The Penance of St. John Chrysostom", one of the few copper engravings by Cranach, which refers to the work that Dürer executed a decade earlier, around 1497. Very rare. Provenance: French private collection. 25.4 x 20 cm on copper. 27,5 x 21,5 cm the sheet. Condition A (good condition).
