REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 1669) - "Self-portrait,... - Lot 17 - Eric Caudron
REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 1669) - "Self-portrait, Rembrandt drawing at a window". 1648. Original etching, drypoint and burin. Ref: Boon & Bartsch, no. 22. Hind, no. 229. Proof of a somewhat late edition, with the signature "Rembrandt f. 1648" in the point and the landscape engraved in the window (upper part of the landscape almost worn and very faint), on laid paper. Small margins. This is Rembrandt's last large engraved self-portrait. In this iconic image, the artist presented himself, at the age of forty-two, not as an ideal but in a concrete way, as an artist at work, interrupted with an engraving needle or a pen in his hand. His captivating gaze draws the viewer's eye into this quiet, dark space. One of the best artist's self-portraits ever engraved. 16.6 x 13.8 cm. Condition B (two short tears in the right margin, one of which reaches the subject very slightly for 2mm. Small traces of sticker and some freckles on the reverse. Small lacks in the margins and rare tiny light freckles in the background of the subject on the left).
