REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 1669) - "The... - Lot 33 - Eric Caudron
REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 1669) - "The Artist's Mother Seated, in an Oriental Headdress". 1631. Original etching. Signed and dated ""RHL 1631"" in the lower right corner of the composition. Ref: Bartsch, n°348; New Hollstein, n°86. Proof of the 2nd state (the shadow erased behind the head), on laid paper. Faint margins. Good inking. RARE. Rembrandt's mother, Neeltgen Willemsdochter Zuytbrouch, daughter of a baker, had nine children, of whom Rembrandt was the eighth. The artist often depicted her in his works, including the one presented here. However, there is no documentary evidence that the old lady in these works is Rembrandt's mother. It was in the 1679 inventory of the estate of Clement de Jonghe that these images were assumed to be representations of the artist's mother. 14,6 x 12,8 cm. Condition B/C (formerly mounted by the right corners on vellum paper, very slightly cut inside the copperplate mark at lower left, tears and restorations to the lower right and left corners, a very short restored tear to the top edge).
