ROME - EXCEPTIONAL PANORAMIC VIEW OF ROME... - Lot 7 - Eric Caudron
Rome, 1765. Magnificent panoramic view in 12 plates engraved with etching and burin by G. Vasi. Proofs on laid paper, planed. Title cartouche on the lower left with a dedication to Charles III of Spain and a directory of about 390 monuments or sites in the tablet. RARE COPY WITH ITS ENGRAVED FLORAL BORDER. Between 1746 and 1761, Giuseppe Vasi, engraver and architect, published 10 volumes with 240 engravings of the monuments of Rome. At that time, the baroque period of Rome was coming to an end, so his prints constitute a kind of inventory. G. Vasi's objective here was the representation of "the Rome of his time", and so, because of his training as an architect, he was able to reproduce the monuments of the city with precision and great detail. It is also said that Vasi included himself in the panorama by sketching in the left foreground. With this splendid and famous view of Rome, from St. Peter's Basilica in the north (left) to the Fonte dell'acqua Paola in the east (right), it is really possible to get an accurate idea of the city in the 18th century. Canvas. 105 x 264 cm approximately. Condition B/C (old restorations and canvas)
