LAPICQUE Charles (1898-1988) - "Original Composition Acrylic - Lot 382
LAPICQUE Charles (1898-1988) - "Original Composition Acrylic Polygraphy on Plan-Film". 1955. Polygraphy signed and justified on film-plate. Charles Lapicque tried his hand at this technique during the 50's and 60's.
"As far as the relationship between the painter and the public is concerned, printing in several copies has advantages that have been demonstrated too often to need to be repeated. Perhaps less emphasis has been placed on the intimate comfort that can result for the artist, who constantly bases new creations on the repertoire of forms existing in his studio.
The one who draws a lot finds himself in the presence of a mass of works where some precious figures shine, of which his honor obviously requires that he deprives himself when he wants to serve his amateurs. By multiplying these most endearing single works, he not only satisfies a larger public, but he keeps the sensitive imprint of his inspirations, thus making a lie of the famous legal principle "give and take is not worth it". This is the essential motive that has caused the emergence of the "polygraphs" currently exhibited at the "Cultural Center of the Arts Gallery". They differ quite frankly from the reproductions presented until now. The subjective used gives to the colors a vivacity and a depth difficult to surpass. The physical process of printing the form, of a great flexibility, allows variations in scale from one copy to another. Finally, a considerable part is left to the hand of the artist, so that the colored composition can also be modified for each piece that he treats. The large amount of work he has to do of course leads to a very limited print run. I hope not to be indiscreet in revealing that this undertaking of polygraphy, after many difficulties of development, has become for me a fruitful source of joy, teachings and even enriching surprises.
