Accompanied by an exhibition booklet for the Émile Bernard exhibition at the Charpentier Gallery from May 26 to June 13, 1926, inscribed to Mr. Chasseray: “To Chasseray, who wants to be a man of the woods… these solemn, engraved woods—E. Bernard,” and an engraved woodcut enhanced with brown wash, *La Ballade des pendus* (as is, with sun damage and stains). PROVENANCE: Collection of Mr. Albert Chasseray, then passed down through the family. HISTORY: Mr. Albert Chasseray (1894–1976) was an actor at the Comédie Française and the somewhat eccentric architect of the Moulin Joyeux in Loué, in the Sarthe department. There, he erected, among other things, a colossal cement dragon, the Dragon de la Calomnie, standing 15 meters tall. The site was unfortunately destroyed in 1985.
