RARE COPY of this collection of 20 plates created by the inventor of lithography, Aloys SENEFELDER, to illustrate his work *The Art of Lithography* (Paris, Treutel & Würtz, 1819). The author’s aim with this supplement is to present all the techniques (chalcography, etching, color lithography, etc.) that he himself developed, as well as the many possible applications of lithography. Indeed, this process—which had only recently become known in France (invented by Senefelder in 1796 in Bavaria)—is still often regarded as a mere printing technique rather than an art form in its own right. Created by Senefelder out of necessity, it built upon stone engraving—an inexpensive medium—as well as several chemical processes that could easily be delegated to a low-skilled and therefore inexpensive workforce.
