19th c. Russian school, entourage of Victor Vasnetsov. Saint Alexis of Moscow, Metropolitan of Kiev and All Russia, holding a Gospel (Saint John, X 9-10) and blessing with his right hand. Mixed media (tempera, oil on plaster slip); transferred to canvas mounted on wood. 44.5 × 35.5 cm. According to the tradition of the former Moscow owner, this is a fragment of the decoration of a Moscow church (perhaps the Cathedral of Christ the Savior?) destroyed by the Bolsheviks in the 1930s, and salvaged by a pious soul or at least one sensitive to beauty.
