Between 1855 and 1856, Andrei Stackenschneider decorated the apartments of Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolayevich in the Winter Palace, in preparation for his marriage to Alexandra of Oldenburg (in the Orthodox rite, Grand Duchess Alexandra Petrovna). Work on the interior was completed in January 1856. The Salon de Cupid was particularly admired. Elena Andreyevna, the architect's daughter, who was present at the inspection on January 25, 1856, wrote in her diary: "The luminosity and elegance of this room are indescribable. The ceiling is stuccoed and gilded, mirrors adorn the columns and small white cupids are placed on the mirrors and on the mantelpiece. This rococo-style room is a true haven of peace and comfort." The furniture was made in Andrei Tour's workshop. But the designs for the rooms have disappeared. This watercolor is a discovery of the utmost importance. Андрей Штакеншнейдер (1802-1865).
