Kwasimukamba or Graman Quassi (1692-1787) was a freed slave who became a Surinamese physician and botanist in the 18th century. This engraving is taken from John Gabriel Stedman's account, "Voyage à Suriname et dans l'intérieur de la Guyane...", recounting a five-year expedition against the rebellious blacks of Suriname. 27.8 x 20.5 cm.
