Plates depicting the most remarkable sites, monuments and settlements in the BASQUE COUNTRY, Navarre, Béarn, Bigorre, the counties of Comminges and Foix and Roussillon, and a lithographed frontispiece portrait by Melling after Vigneron. Ignace Antoine Melling (Karlsruhe 1763 - Paris 1831) was a French architect, painter, engraver and traveler of Lorraine origin. He was a pupil of his uncle Joseph Melling in Strasbourg. He was architect to the Sultan of Oman Selim III from 1795 to 1803, then landscape architect to Empress Josephine. He exhibited at the Salon from 1804 to 1824. In 1809, he set up an engraving workshop to reproduce his drawings. In 1821, the French government sent him to the Pyrenees to demonstrate that their natural beauty could rival that of the Alps.
