Louis Robert BATE (1898 - Viet-nam 1948) - "Doha [...]" (Africa). Pencil and ink drawing on paper, signed lower right by the artist. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, Louis Robert Bate came to Paris in 1924 with a municipal scholarship. A student of Jules Coutan and Paul Landowski, and a member of the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français, he won an honorable mention at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1925, and second prize in the Prix de Rome in 1929. Artist in residence and scholarship holder at Casa de Velázquez (1932), then scholarship holder for Afrique-Équatoriale française, he won the Prix de Guadeloupe in 1935 and the Prix de l'Indochine (en) in 1938. Working at the Đà Lạt School of Architecture, captured and tortured by the Viet-Minh, he was killed on March 1, 1948. 53 x 40.3 cm.
