Adrien Reland's map of Japan is the first to use Sino-Japanese characters on a European printed map, and represents a radical departure from earlier European maps of Japan. At bottom right, an inset of the area around Nagasaki, the location of an island that was at the time the only place where Westerners were allowed to trade with Japan. 52.5 x 61 cm.
