Engraved map, on laid paper. Antique colors. Published in Amsterdam c.1740. Folded in two. Margins. Fine example of Matthaus Seutter's edition of Adrien Reland's seminal map of Japan. Adrien Reland's map of Japan is the first to use Sino-Japanese characters on a European printed map, and represents a radical departure from earlier European maps of Japan. At bottom right, an inset of the area around Nagasaki, the location of an island that was at the time the only place where Westerners were allowed to trade with Japan. 52.5 x 61 cm. Condition A (foxing in the margins and verso, fine coloring).
