ORIGINAL DRAWING IN PENCIL AND GOUACHE. Wove paper. Suzanne Tourte moved to Paris in 1924, where she moved in the artistic and literary world. André Maurois, Hervé Bazin, Paul Guth, Armand Lanoux, Louise de Vilmorin, Robert Mallet and Paul Fort cultivated her friendship and sang her praises. At the start of the 20th century, when the fundamental concepts of art were being called into question, Suzanne Tourte witnessed unrestrained competition between artists in search of new avenues of expression: the audacity of Fauvism, the affirmation of Cubism, the birth of Abstraction, the aggressiveness of Expressionism and so many others, followed by the "return to order" of the Second World War. In the midst of this turmoil, Suzanne Tourte created her own universe. Her early works are frankly figurative. She then moved into a period known as "winding", in which the shape of her figures is framed by a line. But it was around the 1950s that, as her painting reached full maturity, she gave of her best. This highly personal, most structured work corresponds to the so-called geometrical period. It was followed by a "serene" period. 65 x 50 cm.
