Lot no. 38
[VOLTAIRE (François-Marie Arouet) and CONDORCET (Jean-Antoine-Nicolas Caritat de)] Eloge et pensées de Pascal. Nouvelle Edition, commentée, corrigée et augmentée par Mr. de ***. Paris, [Grasset], 1778. In-8, XII-316 pp, porphyry basane, ornate ribbed spine, title page, speckled edges. Contemporary binding. Rare edition. Copy complete with portraits of Voltaire and Pascal, and illustrated with woodcut vignettes, culs de lampes etc. As early as 1776, Condorcet had published "Pensées de Pascal. Nouvelle édition", with notes by Voltaire taken from the 25th letter of the "Lettres philosophiques". This is the new edition of this work, which Voltaire had printed in Geneva by Grasset. Voltaire added an "Avertissement du nouvel éditeur" and new footnotes signed "Note du présent éditeur", or "second éditeur", numbering one hundred and twenty-eight. Condorcet's notes are signed: "Premier éditeur, auteur de l'Éloge". Voltaire indicates, in his "Avertissement", that the attribution to Fontenelle of the text attached by Condorcet to his edition: "Réflexions sur l'argument de M. Pascal et de M. Locke, concernant la possibilité d'une autre vie à venir", seems to him erroneous. This was probably Voltaire's last book in print. The "Éloge" and the "Pensées" were reprinted in 1780 as t. XVI of "L'Évangile du jour". (Notes from the Bibliothèque Nationale). PHOTOS TO COME WITHIN 3 DAYS
