Alexei Remizov (1877-1957). Lion vert, facing sinister. Paris, 1935.
Ink & gouache on paper. 20 x 15.5 cm. Under glass.
Monogrammed lower right; bears at bottom a dedication in Russian: "To Lev Borisovitch Savinkov / on his birthday 15/27 XIII 1935 / Paris."
Lev (Léon) Savinkov (1912-1987), poet, journalist, son of the famous revolutionary terrorist Boris Savinkov.
The dedication of this heraldic lion to Lev (= lion) Savinkov is no accident. Remizov met his father during his exile in Vologda in 1901-1902. Their relationship survived many arguments, disagreements, break-ups and reconciliations. "Savinkov, the lion-killer": that's what Remizov called Boris Savinkov in the obituary he wrote shortly after his death. As for Lev (Léon) Savinkov, he fought alongside the Republicans in Spain and took part in the French Resistance during the Second World War.
The lion symbol is frequently used by Remizov in his works: "... There are no more lions in Russia, but the breath of the lion has been inhaled through the centuries by the breath of freedom: it is in the Imposter (Pugachev), and in Razine, and in the Petchersk saints. Felis spelaea." (Remizov, The Painted Muzzles).

Expert: Cabinet Honoré d'Urfé.
