Adjutant-General Joseph Gourko's exhortation to Russian troops. December 25, 1877. Four handwritten pages in-4°. Joseph Vladimirovitch Gourko (1828-1901), general-feldmarchal of the Russian army, was one of the commanders of Russian troops in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878. General Gourko's exhortation to the troops: "To you, troops entrusted to me! .... The time has come to cross the Balkans... Your constancy, your firmness in work, your endurance in hardship and your incredible patience will surprise all those who look at these mountains... The enviable fate of being the first to cross these Balkan mountains fell to the oldest regiment in our army, Peter the Great's Preobrajensky regiment, which marched at the head of General Rauch's vanguard... This glorious stage of the war ended with the occupation of Sofia... Years will pass, and your descendants, visiting these wild mountains, will proudly and triumphantly say: "Russian troops have crossed these mountains and resurrected the glory of the heroic warriors of Suvorov's and Rumyantsev's armies".
