DEGAS Edgar (Paris 1834 - 1917) - [Une chanteuse de café-concert]. c. 1877-1880. Monotype in gray ink. Proof on wove paper printed with lost edges, mounted by the upper corners on strong wove paper. On the back of the mounting sheet: red stamp of the Degas studio (Lugt n°657), and inventory number of the Degas estate in blue pencil "1409".
in blue pencil "1409". Unpublished work: Adhémar et Cachin not described; Eugenia Parry Janis not described.
Provenance: Galerie Bonafous-Murat. Degas estate. Not described, however, in the catalog of the sale of prints from the Degas Estate on November 22 and 23, 1918 (Ve vacation). Degas was a great music lover. A regular at the Opéra and backstage, he also frequented the capital's concert cafés. These appeared in his work in the mid-1870s. This hitherto unpublished print can be compared with several pastel-highlighted monotypes, in particular the "Café-concert des Ambassadeurs" (Michel Schulman no. 910, c. 1876-1877, Lyon, Musée des Beaux-Arts). The scroll of a double bass and the streamlined silhouette of a singer, with her hands on her hips and her mouth open, telescope in a similar way, although the framing of this composition is tighter. As is often the case, Degas worked from memory, as suggested by the vaporous atmosphere and rapidly sketched out contours of this monotype. Dimensions: 18.7 x 18.9 cm. Condition B (two marks on the female figure's torso).
