THE SILK INDUSTRY UNDER THE MONARCHY OF JULY - "VISIT of Mgr the DUC D'AUMALE to the Croix-Rousse (LYON), in the Workshop of Mr CARQUILLAT, on August 24, 1841". 1844. Subject woven by Carquillat (1802-1884) in 1844 for the House of Bouvard and Mathevon, after a drawing by Claude Bonnefond Lampas. One can see here the Duke of Aumale escorted by notabilities: the lieutenant-general Aymard, the mayor of the Croix-Rousse, the prefect and the president of the Conseil des prud'hommes. The head of the workshop Carquillat and the manufacturer Mathevon presented the Duke of Aumale with a woven portrait of Jacquard. Woven paintings were very fashionable in the 19th century. A designer and a director adapted the painter's work to the weaving "in intaglio". A technical improvement of the Jacquard mechanism allows a great precision of the passages of the shuttle, so that the black points of the weft on the white of the warp create the illusion of the engraving with the burin (Hélène DELPECH, " The industry of the silk under the monarchy of July "). 98 x 78 cm. Condition C (some tears and stains).
