Lot no. 49
CALLOT Jacques (1592 - 1635) - "The Temptation of Saint Anthony". 1635. Original etching. Proof of a slightly late edition, on laid paper. Reference: Lieure, n°1416. Small margins. "The Temptation of Saint Anthony" was illustrated twice by Jacques Callot. The first time was in Florence, around 1616. The proofs are rare, the artist having accidentally destroyed his plate before he really finished it. At the end of his life, in 1635, the engraver gave a second version of the subject, more elaborate, more technically rigorous: here is a proof. 36,6 x 47,4 cm. Condition A (rare short tears formerly restored on the edges and slight traces of handling)
