VENITIAN SCHOOL of the XVIIth century: "The swaddled cat or The Cat's Boil". Oil on canvas (Lining. Old trace of accident and lifts in the upper left; small gaps, especially around the edges; some restorations. Old yellowed and dirty varnish). H. 95,3 - W. 122 cm. An early version of a composition in the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes, dated around 1580 - 1590, of similar dimensions (93.5 x 117.5 cm) and known through different versions, attributed either to Nicolo Frangipane (active from 1565 to 1597) or to Northern Italy, late 16th century (Cf. Catalogue raisonné des peintures italiennes du musée des Beaux-Arts de Nantes XIIIe - XVIIIe siècle, by Béatrice Sarrazin. N ° 53, pp. MN 1994). The composition, with the different kinds of characters, soldiers, young peasants, jesters and shrews, their gestures and their grimace, the abundance of food, and the cat in swaddling clothes to whom a white porridge is served, like a baby, was the subject of a precise analysis in the exhibition catalog: La Grande Bouffe. Peintures comiques dans l'Italie de la Renaissance (pp.80 & 81) Musée Municipale de Soissons October 2017 - March 2018 (Lienart Editions Paris 2017).
