Uncommon first edition (t. 1 is from the 2nd printing, 1818). According to Clouzot, "it is very difficult to gather these four volumes in first date, it is a very rare set". Volumes II, III and IV, in first editions, are in the right date. Published from 1817 to 1823, the work was a huge success: the first volume provoked a veritable explosion of enthusiasm in Catholic circles; Lamennais harshly criticized the Reformation, the Revolution, liberalism, and Gallicanism.
