DÜRER Albrecht (Nüremberg 1471 1528) - "Hercules, holding a club in his right hand, walking with his left foot over two defeated soldiers". c. 1496-1497. Engraved wood. Signed with the artist's monogram in the plate. Ref: Bartsch, n°127. Meder, n°238. Nice proof with margins, on strong laid paper (without watermark). Printed in the 18th century. Good margins. The subject of this engraving has been the subject of much debate. The name of Hercules is inscribed on the tablet on the upper part of the composition, but this scene does not show any of the episodes associated with his life or his "labours". It is assumed that this composition depicts Hercules killing the twins Eurytus and Kteatus who overwhelmed all men in their path with their physical strength. Their death is said to have been discovered by their mother, Molione, accompanied here by a fury. 49,5 x 32,5 cm. Condition B (margins very slightly sunned).
