REMBRANDT H. van Rijn (1606 1669) - "Faust" (Faust in his study, watching a magic disk). c.1652. Original etching and drypoint. Ref: Bartsch, no. 270, Hind, no. 260, proof on watermarked laid paper (Near Strasbourg Lily A.4WR (b), circa 1653). In this luminous print, Rembrandt captures a moment of mystical revelation. A scholar, identified as Dr. Faustus from German legend, looks up in wonder as a radiant disc and a dark figure with a spectral hand appear outside his window. On the disc are religious symbols and abbreviations, including "INRI" (for "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews" in Latin). The precise meaning of this mysterious print has been the subject of much scientific debate. 21,1 x 16 cm. Condition B (cut at the border of the subject on three sides, margin fillet at the foot, tiny little hole at the bottom left, lower right corner formerly consolidated, small stains on the right side of the cabinet, traces of old mounting on the reverse and some oxidation stains).
