- COTTIN (Sophie)]. Amélie Mansfield. By Madame ***, author of Claire d'Albe and Malvina. Paris, Maradan, year XI - 1802, 4 vols. in 16, xij-223 pp., [4]-208 pp., [4]-273 pp., [4]-310 pp. half-basecloth, smooth spines with partitions and flowers, cherry coloured title and toms, yellow edges speckled with red (period binding). Spine a little rubbed, corners bumped, important foxing in volume II. Anonymous first edition. This is the third published work of Sophie Cottin (1770-1807), of a much more mastered style than her first two novels. The plot revolves around the arranged marriage between the cousins Ernest de Woldemar and Amélie de Lunebourg, around Amélie's revolt at this prospect, her marriage to the musician Mansfield, and the incredible events that follow. The theme of the opposition between the necessities of lineage and the demands of the heart is treated with a wealth of twists and turns and with the kind of accurate notations that made the work such a lasting success.
