Cologne, Pierre Marteau, 1693, in-8, [16]-432 pp. with an 18th century engraving clumsily added as a frontispiece, brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red edges. Bound in the 18th century. (damage to the upper cover). First edition of this important collection of satires, epigrams and verse pieces directed against the government of the two cardinals (Richelieu, pp. 1-172; Mazarin, pp. 175-217) and that of their "successor" Colbert (pp. 219-287). The part devoted to Fouquet (pp. 289-310) is mainly composed of pieces favourable to the superintendent, which is yet another way to denigrate Colbert. The book recalls the extraordinary unpopularity of the two cardinal ministers, which was systematically veiled later by a generally favourable scholarly historiography, with an excessive emphasis on the construction of the state, contrary to what contemporaries really felt. Finally, we should mention, at the end of the collection, the Paris ridicule by the famous sodomite poet Claude Le Petit (1638-1662), who was burned in the Grève for his B.. des Muses, ou les Neuf pucelles putains. It was published separately in 1668 with the same address as our collection. Brunet V, 624. Lachèvre, Recueils collectifs de poésie, III, 408-417.
