- FURETIERE (Antoine). Le Roman bourgeois. New edition, revised again, corrected & increased with historical remarks, a satyr in verse by the same author, & intaglio figures. Nancy, Jean-Baptiste Cusson, 1712, in 8° with 6 plates in intaglio hors-texte, unsigned, brown basane, spine ribbed, spotted. Binding of the period. Covers trimmed, one lower jaw split. First issue by Cusson in Nancy, uncommon (we usually see the one of 1713), and first to be illustrated. Originally published in 1666, this novel is set in the world of lawyers and prosecutors in the Maubert district of Paris, where Furetière lived, especially in the second part, which takes a very funny turn at the world of chicanery and litigation. Cioranescu, XVII, 31 940. Cf. Brunet II, 1426 (only the 1713 edition from Nancy is known). Ex. of Joseph Verdavainne, with later handwritten mention on the first endpapers.
