- DEVOTION] - The Holy Mass, in which are represented by the actions of the priest the mysteries of the Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. With the prayers applied to each mystery. A very useful work for the faithful to attend devoutly to this holy Sacrifice. Paris, François Jouenne, s.d., in-12, [37] ff. n. ch., including the title, with 35 numbered copper-engraved figures, marbled fawn calf, spine ribbed, cloisonné and fleuronné, framed with simple cold fillet on the boards. Binding of the period. One of the forgeries of this devotional suite signed by Landry, and which was reissued many times afterwards; here, with the copperplates already a little worn. It is entirely engraved, and includes: a title, two pages of Avis, and 35 captioned figures opposite a page of text, representing the various stages of a low mass. The association of each of the parts of his liturgy with a particularity of the Passion is traditional, and fits well with the Tridentine doctrine which insisted on the character of the Mass as a renewal of the unique sacrifice of the Cross. But the concern for liturgical pedagogy to which the work bears witness deserves to be noted, for it inspired, right up to the "Missals of the Faithful" of the end of the 19th century, a number of initiatives aimed at the Christian people, who were invited to unite themselves to the phases of the sacrifice in spite of the obstacle of the liturgical language and that of the ritual. In spite of this pedagogical effort, the meditation follows its own order, all done and following the stages of the Passion, independently of the exact liturgical representations which are those of the Mass, a disadvantage inherent in the juxtaposition of two prayers, that of the priest and that of the faithful, which was the rule until the 20th century.
