- COMMINES (Philippe de). The Memoirs of Sir Philippe de Commines, knight, lord of Argenton. On the main facts & gestures of loys XI & Charles VIII his son, Kings of France. And a large index of the most remarkable things. The whole revised & corrected on the edition of Denis Sauvage. Rouen, Jean Berthelin, 1610, large vol. in 12, [11] ff. n. ch. (title, to the reader), 853-[21] pp. with three portrait-frontispieces on two leaves, light havana morocco, spine ribbed with richly decorated double coffers, havana title-piece, triple gilt fillet on the boards, crowned numeral in the centre of the first board, double gilt fillet on the edges, gilt edges, large inner lace. Bound in the 19th century (a corner paper repair on f. 779-780, but a fine copy). This small edition from Rouen, pleasant both in typography and format, is one of the very many ("an infinite number of times", says Molinier) variations of the good version given by Denys Sauvage in 1552. As is well known, the editions of Commines are exceptionally abundant, and there is no complete bibliography of them SHF, Molinier, 4663. Precious copy of Robert-Philippe duc de Chartres (1840-1910), second son of the duc d'Orléans and ancestor of the present princes d'Orléans, with gilt cipher pushed to the centre of the first plate (variant OHR 2584-7), and wet stamp to the first leaf.
