Small leather loss on the upper cover of vol. V. Second collective edition (after that of 1791, republished in 1792-93). It includes, after the notice composed by Diderot on the life of Boulanger (1722-1759) the following texts: L'Antiquité dévoilée par ses usages (vols. I & II); Recherches sur l'origine du despotisme oriental (III); Le Christianisme dévoilé (IV); De la Cruauté religieuse (V); Histoire d'Alexandre le Grand (VI). As is well known, none of these titles appeared during the author's lifetime, and they were moreover heavily retouched by the editors: Boulanger, who died young at Helvétius', was, it seems, a convenient and unattainable nominee for bold theories on atheism and religions, which do not all date back to him.
