ENSOR James Sydney Edouard (Ostend 1860 1949) - "The capital sins dominated by Death". 1904. Original etching. Ref : Taevernier n°126. Signed in the plate. Nice proof on Arches cream laid paper. This plate is the frontispiece of the series "Les péchés capitaux" created by Ensor from 1888 to 1904. James Ensor was a painter par excellence of the light of the North Sea on whose shores he grew up and was strongly marked by the death of his father and grandmother in 1887. This key date marked a turning point in his style, with masks and skeletons appearing in abundance. These two new motifs were directly inspired by the famous Ostend Carnival, which Ensor frequented regularly, and also by his mother's shop, which sold a whole mixture of objects, masks and old prints. Recently disappointed by the lukewarm reception his works have received, these darker subjects denounce the injustices and pettiness of the world, as is clearly the case in this print on the seven deadly sins. All margins, two of which are untrimmed. 14 x 27,4 cm. Condition A (Good condition).
