Alexandre Benois.

Alexander Benoit (1870-1960). Sketch of the set for the ballet "Armida Pavilion".

Paper, watercolor, gouache, ink. 32.5 x 47.5 cm. Below left: signature in pencil and signature and dedication of 1944 to daughter Elena Benoit.

For the first time the ballet "Armida Pavilion" (libretto and scenery by A.S. Benoit) was staged at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1907, and since 1909 it has been one of the most important ballets of the Russian seasons of S.P. Diaghilev in Paris.

The date of 1944 corresponds to the date of dedication. The watercolor itself, most likely, was made in 1907-1909.

Origin: descendants of Elena Benoit.
