- GRACIAN (Baltazar): The Man of Court. Translated and commented by Sieur Amelot de La Houssaye. Paris, 4th edition, Martin-Boudot et Martin, 1687; in 12, 32 ff, 373 pp, 1 p. and 1 f., red morocco, very ornate smooth spine, large gilt lace around the boards, speckled edges. Binding of the XVIIIth century (remboitage). Beautiful engraved frontispiece. It is in this sought-after work that Gracian, a Spanish Jesuit moralist of the Spanish Golden Age, develops his famous maxim "to be vulgar in nothing". (The volume was rebound in the 19th century in an early 18th century binding). Attached : GRACIAN : Le Héros. Rotterdam, Jean Hofhout, 1729; in 12, brown speckled calf, spine ribbed and decorated, red tr. binding of the time. A fine copy of the 2nd edition.
