MANUSCRIPT - HOURS FOR ROME USE Bruges],... - Lot 3 - Eric Caudron
MANUSCRIPT - HOURS FOR ROME USE Bruges], n.d., (ca. 1430), in-18 (9 x 6 cm), Parchment, 132 ff. + II paper, 80 x 60 mm. with calendar justification 60 x 32 mm, 17 long lines, text justification 50 x 30 mm, 15 long lines, textura writing in brown ink, ff. 13, 22, 91v, 92, 113 white, havana morocco, ribbed spine decorated with cold hatched and boxed motifs and gold fleurons, fillet frame and cold garland on dishes with small gold fleurons in spandrel, large gold motif in the centre of the dishes, gold edges (Thompson). Charming manuscript that can be attributed to the group of the Master of the Golden Scrolls. The Master of the Golden Scrolls owes his name to the decoration of golden oaths which he adorns the backgrounds of his miniatures. In fact this name is erroneous because he is not the only illuminator who used his motifs, but it is a group of illuminators who can be traced back to Bruges between 1420 and 1450, and it is also possible that this style spread to other towns in Flanders. The style of the Master of the Golden Scrolls is manifested for the first time in manuscripts in which pre-Eyckian artists collaborated: a Missal of Genoa (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library M. 374) and a Prayer Book with low German texts (New York, Pierpont Morgan Library M. 76) in collaboration with the Master of Beaufort. In this group faces, attitudes and gestures are often stereotyped. The artists of this group often refer to Parisian models for their compositions (I. Hans Collas, "Les Maîtres aux rinceaux d'or", Miniatures flamandes, cat. expo. Brussels, Bibliothèque royale, 30 Sept-30 Dec. 2011, Paris, BnF. 6 March- 10 June 2012, Paris- Brussels 2011, pp. 140-147). This Book of Hours is distinguished by its very small format. Identical formats are used for prestigious recipients: the Hours of Jeanne d'Evreux illuminated by Jean Pucelle, the Très petites heures d'Anne de Bretagne illuminated by Jean d'Ypres and the Hours of Claude de Franc
